Awardees for the 2020 Santa Barbara Peace Prize Announced by United Nations Association of Santa Barbara and Tri Counties

The United Nations Association of Santa Barbara and Tri Counties is delighted to announce the nominees for the 2020 Peace Prize. “We have received seven simply stunning nominations this year for the Peace Prize. We are so excited to honor the individuals in this community that are doing amazing work in the world,” said UNASB President Barbara Gaughen-Muller.

The Santa Barbara UNA Peace Prize was created by the United Nations Association of Santa Barbara and Tri Counties (UNASB). The chapter is the oldest one in the United States, having formed in 1947, and spans San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties.

The nomination criteria for the UNASB Peace Prize:

  • The nominee must live in the Tri-Counties area.

  • The nominee must have achieved global impact in a way that is tangible and measurable, such as:

  1. Creating peace in the world

  2. Expansion or defense of Human Rights internationally

  3. Advancements in developing nations such as creating new infrastructure, delivering supplies, building wells to achieve clean water, creating schools and education opportunities, etc.

Nominations opened in May, and closed in August. The Peace Prize Committee then reviews the nominations, scores the entries, and selects the winner.

This year we are honored to have Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury as our honored keynote speaker for the 75th Anniversary of the UN. Ambassador Chowdhury has been UN Ambassador, a former Under-Secretary General, and founder of the global movement of a Culture of Peace, among other things.
